OF THE INTERNATIONAL GEOGRAPHICAL UNION
Suomeksi

The International Geographical Union is a worldwide organization that coordinates joint activities among geographers. It has almost 100 national committees in individual member countries affiliated to it for the period 1996-2000 (including some countries with observer status), and these committees maintain contacts with university departments of geography, geographical societies and other cooperation partners in their countries and communicate information on events happening in geographical circles to the international organization.

The Finnish national committee meets at least once a year. Its ten members and their deputies are elected for three years at a time and represent all the departments of geography, economic geography and regional science in the country, the Geographical Society of Finland, the Society for Regional and Environmental Studies and the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. The members present annual reports on the activities of the organizations that they represent and draw up lists of degree dissertations and theses produced during the year for publication by the Geographical Society of Finland in its journal Terra.

The present chairman of the Finnish National Committee is MSc, PhD candidate Kaisa Kepsu of the University of Helsinki, the Vice-Chairman Prof. Markku Sotarauta , and the Secretary Ph.D. Olli Ruth of the University of Helsinki.
